| How Does Pumpkin Circle Meet Educational Standards? | |

Pumpkin Circle is
unique in the way it introduces science to young learners, blending facts
with playful language, lively music and dramatic photography.
Pumpkin Circle was
designed with guidance from educators around the country and meets primary
science standards in the following ways: Life Sciences The amazing cycle of nature and life cycle of the pumpkin plant are the central themes of the Pumpkin Circle story. The parts of the plant are identified and examined: giant leaves, twisty tendrils, silver-haired buds, and male and female flowers. Animals, insects and other critters, and their relationship to the garden are discovered. Time-lapsed photography allows us to see the roots growing, flowers opening, bees pollinating, and even pumpkins decomposing. Green leaves are shown taking water and sun to grow, in some cases to the size of elephant ears! Earth Sciences Soil is shown as providing us with a vital resource: our food. Different types of weather are observed. The four seasons are shown, each playing a part in the circle and cycle of life. Physical Sciences Variation in the colors, shapes, sizes, weights and textures of the parts of the plant are clearly and beautifully shown. Investigation and Experimentation Richly detailed observation of the pumpkin plants is shared and encouraged. Comparative and relative descriptions are used in a fun and informative way. Historical And Social Analysis Skills Reference is made to the ancient origins of pumpkins and uses by pilgrims and Native Americans as well as the many contemporary pumpkin artifacts that are part of Fall celebrations. |
